An Ijazah is a certificate confirming that a student has recited to a teacher accurately enough, and consistently enough, for that teacher to formally vouch for their recitation, with a documented chain (sanad) linking back through their own teachers. It's not a quick add-on to a few months of Quran lessons, and our online Ijazah course is built for students who already recite with solid, well-established Tajweed, not for beginners looking for a fast qualification.
We'd rather turn away a student who isn't ready than enrol them onto something that sets unrealistic expectations. If you're newer to Quran study, our Tajweed or Hifz courses are the right starting point, and Ijazah is something to come back to once that foundation is genuinely solid.
What Our Online Ijazah Course Involves
The path to Ijazah is long by design. It typically involves reciting substantial portions of the Quran, sometimes the whole Quran depending on which Ijazah is being pursued, directly to your teacher over a sustained period, with corrections made along the way until the recitation is consistently accurate.
This is measured in months and, for a full Ijazah, often years, not weeks. Your teacher will give you an honest estimate once they've assessed your current level, rather than a fixed timeline promised in advance.
- A thorough review of Tajweed rules applied across real Quranic text, not just in isolated examples
- Correction of makharij, the precise articulation points of each Arabic letter
- Sustained recitation practice, building the stamina to recite long passages accurately without repeated errors
- A final assessment where the student recites to the teacher, who then formally certifies the chain
What an Ijazah Actually Certifies, and What It Doesn't
An Ijazah certifies that a specific teacher assessed a specific student's recitation and judged it accurate enough to vouch for, with a documented chain of transmission behind it. That's a genuine, meaningful achievement, and it's worth being precise about what it is and isn't.
It doesn't automatically make someone a qualified Islamic scholar, and it isn't a general licence to teach without other relevant knowledge and experience. Families choosing any teacher, including one of ours, are right to ask about a teacher's specific chain and to expect a clear, honest answer rather than a vague claim. We'd encourage that same scrutiny here as anywhere else.
How the Process Works With Us
Ijazah lessons are strictly one to one, on Zoom, Skype, or Google Meet, with a teacher who holds their own verified Ijazah and chain. Sessions focus on sustained recitation and correction rather than new material each week, since the point is consistency and accuracy over a long stretch, not covering new ground quickly.
Progress is reviewed regularly and honestly. If a student needs more time on a particular section or habit before moving on, that's what happens, even if it means the process takes longer than first expected.
Before You Enrol: What to Check
A few honest questions are worth asking yourself before starting, and we'll ask them too during your free trial.
- Is your Tajweed already strong and consistent, or would a Tajweed refresher course serve you better first?
- Do you know which qira'ah, typically Hafs 'an Asim, the Ijazah will be issued in?
- Are you able to commit consistently over a long period, since irregular attendance slows this process significantly?
- Is Hifz (memorisation) part of what you're aiming for, or are you focused on Tajweed accuracy specifically?
