Who Was Hussain ibn Ali?

He and his older brother al-Hasan grew up in the Prophet's household, and the Prophet's love for them is recorded in authentic narrations. He said: "Al-Hasan and Al-Husain are the chiefs of the youths of Paradise" (Jami' at-Tirmidhi 3768, graded Sahih by Darussalam), and of the two of them: "They... are my two sweet basils in this world" (Sahih al-Bukhari 3753).

The Events of Karbala in Brief

  1. A question of allegiance. Following a change of rule, Hussain declined to give his pledge of allegiance, believing it to be wrong.
  2. Leaving for Kufa. He left Makkah with his family and a small group of companions, after receiving letters of support from people in Kufa.
  3. Stopped at Karbala. On the way, his party was intercepted by a much larger force and prevented from continuing.
  4. The 10th of Muharram, 61 AH. After days of standoff, Hussain and many members of his family and companions were killed.
