Safeguarding Policy
Last updated: 20 August 2026
1. Our Commitment
Mariam Quran Tutor is committed to keeping every child who learns with us safe. Since almost all of our students are children learning one-to-one online, we take safeguarding seriously at every stage, from how we select teachers to how lessons are run and how concerns are handled. This policy sits alongside our Terms and Conditions and our Privacy Policy, and takes priority over our standard Refund and Cancellation Policy wherever a safeguarding concern is involved.
2. Safer Recruitment of Teachers
Every teacher who joins Mariam Quran Tutor holds a valid Enhanced DBS check, which we renew or verify regularly through the DBS Update Service. We select teachers for their character as well as their knowledge, and no teacher begins working with students until their checks and references have been fully verified.
3. How We Keep Online Lessons Safe
We ask that a parent or guardian be present in the home, or within reasonable earshot, during every lesson, particularly for younger children. Lessons should take place in a shared or neutral space in the home rather than a bedroom where possible, with cameras showing an appropriate, uncluttered background.
Teachers do not contact students or families through personal social media accounts, and any communication outside of the lesson itself, such as scheduling messages, should include the parent or guardian. Lessons are not recorded as standard practice; if a recording is ever needed for teaching quality purposes, we will ask for the parent’s consent first.
4. Code of Conduct
We expect every teacher to maintain a clear, professional boundary with students at all times, and never to develop a personal relationship with a student outside of their role as a tutor. Teachers do not ask students to keep secrets from their parents, and any personal information a child shares that raises concern will always be passed on appropriately, never kept confidential. Full detail on the standard of conduct we expect from students, parents, and teachers is set out in our Terms and Conditions.
5. Recognising a Safeguarding Concern
A safeguarding concern can take many forms, including signs of physical, emotional, or sexual abuse, neglect, or a child disclosing something that worries a teacher during a lesson. Our teachers are trained to remain alert to changes in a student’s behaviour, appearance, or wellbeing, and to take any concern seriously, however small it may seem at first.
6. What We Do If We Are Worried
If a teacher or any member of our team has a concern about a child’s safety, they report it to our Designated Safeguarding Lead as soon as possible, and always within the same working day. We will never promise a child to keep something secret if it relates to their safety.
Where a child is in immediate danger, we will contact the emergency services on 999. For other concerns, we may contact local child protection services or, where appropriate, the NSPCC Helpline on 0808 800 5000. We keep a confidential, secure record of any concern raised, in line with our Privacy Policy.
7. Designated Safeguarding Lead
Our Designated Safeguarding Lead is responsible for receiving and acting on any concern raised by a teacher, parent, or student. You can reach our team directly through our Contact Us page, and any message flagged as a safeguarding matter will be passed to the Designated Safeguarding Lead without delay.
8. Raising a Concern as a Parent
If you, as a parent or guardian, ever have a concern about a lesson, a teacher’s conduct, or your child’s wellbeing in connection with our service, please contact us straight away using the details below. You will never be made to feel your concern is too small to raise, and we will always take it seriously and respond promptly.
9. Working With Other Agencies
Where necessary, and in line with UK safeguarding law, we will work with local authorities, schools, and the police to protect a child’s welfare. This may occasionally mean sharing relevant information without a parent’s prior consent, where doing so is necessary to keep a child safe.
10. Reviewing This Policy
We review this policy regularly to keep it in line with current safeguarding guidance and best practice, and update it whenever our procedures change.
